Candy Cane Cookies Recipe

Ingredients
  1/2   cup shortening  
  1/2   cup butter, softened  
  1   cup powdered sugar  
  1    egg, slightly beaten  
  1   tsp almond extract  
  1   tsp vanilla extract  
  2-1/2   cups all-purpose flour  
  1   tsp salt  
  1/2   tsp red food coloring  
  1/3   cup finely crushed peppermint candy  
  1/3   cup sugar  
 
Instructions
 
  1. Cream shortening and butter in a large bowl until fluffy, then add the next 6 ingredients and mix well.

 
  2. Divide the dough in half; add the red food colouring to one half, mixing it well.

 
  3. On a lightly floured surface roll a teaspoon of each dough into a 4-1/4 inch rope. Place ropes side by side, and carefully twist together; curve one end down to resemble a cane. Repeat with remaining dough.

 
  4. Place cookies on an ungreased baking sheet and bake at 375 degrees for about 9 minutes or just until edges begin to brown.

 
  5. Combine candy and sugar and mix well. Remove cookies from sheets while warm and coat with the candy mixture.
