Yield: 12 servings

Ingredients
5   medium Granny Smith apples, diced
  1  cup whole-berry cranberry sauce
  1/2  cup chopped walnuts, toasted
  2  cups all-purpose flour
  1  tablespoon baking powder
  1  teaspoon salt
  2  tablespoons sugar
  1/2  cup shortening
  3/4  cup milk
  2  cups water
  2  cups sugar
  1/2  teaspoon ground cinnamon
  1/2  teaspoon ground cloves

Instructions

  1. STIR together first 3 ingredients; drain.

  2. COMBINE flour and next 3 ingredients. Cut in shortening with a pastry blender until crumbly; add milk, stirring until dry ingredients are moistened.

  3. TURN dough out onto a lightly floured surface; knead 3 or 4 times.

  4. ROLL dough into an 18 x 12-inch rectangle. Spread apple mixture over dough. Roll up, jelly-roll fashion, starting at short end.

  5. CUT into 1-inch slices, and place, cut side down, in a greased 13 x 9-inch pan.

  6. BRING 2 cups water and next 3 ingredients to a boil in a saucepan; boil 5 minutes. Remove from heat, and stir in butter. Pour hot syrup over dumplings.
