Angel Squares Recipe

Yield: 16-2-inch Squares
 
Ingredients
  1  cup sugar  
  1/2  cup all-purpose flour  
  2  teaspoons baking powder  
  1/2  teaspoon salt  
  1/2  cup shortening  
  1   whole egg  
  1   egg yolk  
  1/2  teaspoon vanilla  
 
Instructions
 
  1. Mix the first 8 ingredients well and spread out in the bottom of 8-inch square cake pan. Pat down smooth. Mix the 3 ingredients in the (second step) and spread on top of the other mixture. Sprinkle with nuts or place pecan halves neatly.

 
  2. Second Step: To make the meringue use the egg white from above with 1 cup sifted brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.

 
  3. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes or until slightly brown.
